St. Francis Solanus

Chapel of St. Anthony, Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Ravenna, Italy

This is one of a set of life-size statues of Franciscan saints that line the walls of the chapel. Each wears a similar light-gray version of the Franciscan habit, with rope cincture and hood. The crucifix in the saint's hand refers to his notable successes in preaching to South American Indians and others. The sculpture to which he casts his eye may represent the little hut and oratory that he built after being shipwrecked and finding himself alone in the wilds of America (Navarro, Acta Sanctorum, July vol. 5, 864).
